Keywords in Portuguese
Determinação da idade pelos dentes
Odontologia legal
Radiografia panorâmica

Abstract in English
In living people, age estimation has become essential due to increasing migratory movements and cases where an individual's age is unknown. In addition, it helps to identify the possibility of reaching adulthood. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the method proposed by Olze has applicability for the age estimation in a Brazilian population and whether it is capable of determining the age of criminal responsibility. For this, 500 panoramic radiographs of Brazilian individuals aged between 15 and 24 years old from both sexes were used and the stages for secondary dentin formation, periodontal recession, attrition and cementum apposition of lower premolars were analyzed. The correlation between chronological and estimated ages was verified by multiple regression analysis. The results showed an overestimation of the real age for all teeth and age groups in both sexes and the biggest average difference between the real and the estimated age was 7.27 for men and 5.41 for women. The method proved to be useful for age estimating of individuals from 20 years old, and should be applied cautiously and as an auxiliary tool. However, for determining the age of criminal responsibility, it was not considered adequate.
