Abstract in English
Age estimation is one of the fields of forensic odontology and, in practice, it may be applied according to the age of interest. In the age group of sub-adults, third molars are studied. These teeth are useful to assess the age of criminal and civil majority in most countries. In general, these teeth are analyzed by means of radiographs. The objective of this study was to classify the development of third molars from radiographs using the staging system proposed by Gleiser & Hunt modified by Köhler (GHK). Additionally, the study aimed to investigate the performance of GHK technique to allocate individuals below or above the age limits of interest established in 14, 16 and 18 years. The sample consisted of 1033 panoramic radiographs of females (n = 634) and males (n = 399) aged between 8 and 23 years. In each radiograph, third molars (n = 3053) were classified based on GHK technique. The correlation between chronological age and third molars stages was investigated. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curves (AUC) quantified the performance of the technique. Spearman's coefficient revealed strong, positive and significant correlation between the maturation stages of all four Third molars (p < 0.05). Combined sex outcomes showed area under the curve of 0.834 (± 0.02), 0.858 (± 0.016) and 0.908 (± 0.014) for allocation of individuals, according the diagnoses of age limits of 14, 16 and 18 years using GHK technique. The technique tested in this study showed proper applicability for allocating Russian individuals below or above the ages of 14, 16 and 18 years.
