Tornozelo

Identification of ankle injury risk factors in professional soccer players through a pre-season functional assessment

Abstract in English
The ankle is the segment most prone to injury in soccer due to the absorption of the mechanical load imposed by the interaction between the player and the ground, as well as contact with the opponent. This situation makes the joint susceptible to musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains, ligament injuries and fractures. Etiologically, the risk of ankle injury depends on intrinsic factors such as muscle strength asymmetries, decreased flexibility and decreased proprioception, as well as age and history of previous injuries. Therefore, it is expected that an analysis of these parameters through a functional assessment can relate the incidence of injuries with the deficits found during the preseason period, enabling the identification of real risk factors to predict the occurrence of injuries. Objective: To identify risk factors that may predispose to ankle injuries present in the pre-season assessment in professional soccer players. Method: Longitudinal study, evaluating 89 professional soccer athletes in the pre-season, including anamnesis and anthropometric data collection, ankle isokinetic evaluation and functional tests: Dorsiflexion Lunge Test (DLT) and Y Balance Test (YBT). The athletes were monitored during the competitive period, and the incidence of injury was surveyed. The association of quantitative variables and injury outcome was analyzed by Student's t-test for independent samples, and for the association of qualitative variables and injury outcome the Chi-square test was performed. Results: The incidence of ankle injury was associated with lower YBT values in the dominant limb (p= 0.042; OR= 2.31) and non-dominant (p= 0.017; OR= 2.88). Higher BMI values were also associated with higher injury occurrence (p= 0.016; OR= 7.01). Conclusion: Functional tests such as YBT are indicated tools for assessing the physical capacities and possible risks of ankle sprains, as they can evaluate the ankle functional capacity in a complex way, thus minimizing the risk of injury. Athletes' BMI should also be taken into account to prevent such injuries.
