Abstract in English
This survey was conducted with 455 patients undergoing breast cancer treatment in São Judas Tadeu Hospital, in the city of Barretos, state of São Paulo, during the period of 1970 to 1990. The purpose was to assess their survival, through Iife tables tecnique, in the various stages of the disease and different rates of axillary lymph node involvement in two different groups of patients, one under the age of 50 and the other above. ln addition, a comparison was made between two types of treatment: pre-surgical and post-surgical radiotherapy. A comparison was also made between two time segments whether there was improvement in the survival rate. The survey revealed that the survival rates were 65,5%, 52,0% and 39,0% to 5, 10 and 20 years respectively. Among 455 patients, 11 (2,4%) were classified as E I, 122 (26,8%) as E II, 192 (42,2%) as E III, 21 (4,6%) as E IV and 109 (24,0%) as TxNx. The patients in the preliminary stages (E I and E II) had the best survival rates, whereas patients in TxNx and in E II had similar rates. Studying the effect of age in the survival rate, it was observed that patients under 50 years old had better rates than those with 50 years or older. Patients with zero to three axillary lymph nodes involved had better rates than the group with four or more nodes involved. There was no difference in the survival rate between the groups that received pre-surgical and post-surgical radiotherapy. ln addition, there was no improvement of prognosis in the patients observed between 1970-80 and 1981-90.
