Este estudo objetivou analisar o sofrimento emocional de idosos com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 da Estratégia Saúde da Família de Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo do tipo inquérito domiciliar de base populacional, de delineamento transversal. Empregou-se a versão brasileira do questionário Problems Areas in Diabetes para verificar o grau de sofrimento emocional. Participaram 338 pessoas com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, 66,3% eram mulheres, 51,5% encontravam-se na faixa etária de 60 a 69 anos, possuíam baixa renda e escolaridade. O escore médio de sofrimento emocional foi de 20,2 (DP=16,6) e variou de 0 a 74. Na subdimensão relacionada aos problemas emocionais verificou-se que 35,2% dos idosos se preocupavam com o futuro e com a possibilidade de sérias complicações. Acerca do tratamento, 20,4% relataram problemas nas metas claras e concretas no cuidado da doença. Além disso, 25,1% dos idosos referiram a existência de sentimentos de privação a respeito da comida e refeições. Na subdimensão sobre o apoio social, 6,8% se sentem sozinhos com o diabetes. O alto grau de sofrimento emocional mostrou-se associado a: autopercepção de saúde, idade do diagnóstico, número de doenças associadas ao DM2, uso de insulina isolado ou associado aos antidiabéticos orais, autoeficácia e disfunções renais (p<0,05). O problema sério mais relatado pelos idosos foi preocupar-se com o futuro e com a possibilidade de sérias complicações (35,2%). Foi possível identificar as dimensões associadas ao sofrimento emocional dos idosos com diabetes. Esta análise fornecerá subsídios para o planejamento estratégico de ações destinadas à população geriátrica na Atenção Primária à Saúde destinadas à garantia do envelhecimento com qualidade de vida.

This study aimed to analyze the emotional suffering of elderly people with type 2 diabetes mellitus from the Family Health Strategy of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, population-based household survey study. The Brazilian version of the Problems Areas in Diabetes questionnaire was used to verify the degree of emotional distress. A total of 338 people aged 60 years or over participated in the study, 66.3% were women, 51.5% were aged between 60 and 69 years, had low income and education. In the sub-dimension related to social distress, 35.2% of the elderly worried about their future and possibilities of serious complications. About treatment, 20.4% reported problems with clear and concrete goals. Also, 25.1% of the elderly mentioned the existence of feelings of privation about goods and meals. In the sub-dimension of social support, 6.8% were feeling alone with their diabetes.The average score of emotional distress was 20.2 (SD=16.6) and ranged from 0 to 74. The high degree of emotional distress was associated with: self-perceived health, age at diagnosis, number of diseases associated with DM2, use of insulin alone or associated with oral antidiabetics, self-efficacy and renal dysfunction (p<0.05). The most serious problem reported by the elderly was worrying about the future and the possibility of serious complications (35.2%). It was possible to identify the dimensions associated with the emotional suffering of elderly people with diabetes. This analysis will provide subsidies for the strategic planning of actions aimed at the geriatric population in Primary Health Care aimed at ensuring aging with quality of life.
