Abstract in English
The immune response developed by the host against Mycobacterium tuberculosis is considered complex and multifaceted. This bacillus-host interaction results, in most cases, in an asymptomatic latent infection, which may or may not progress to the active form of tuberculosis (TB). The present study aimed to compare the cellular immune response in children with tuberculosis disease and latent tuberculosis through the plasmatic profile of cytokines IL-6, IL-10, IFN-gamma, TNF, by the ELISA method. This is a prospective exploratory, descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study that compared cytokines in children aged 2 to 15 years with active tuberculosis and latent tuberculosis in clinical follow-up at the Children's Tuberculosis Outpatient Clinic of the Centro de Saúde Escola de Ribeirão Preto. The results obtained in this study did not affect statistically significant differences between the active and latent tuberculosis groups. However, a slight increase in IL-10, IFN-gamma and TNF was observed in the group with latent tuberculosis, and in IL-6 in the group of patients with active tuberculosis. These results highlight the importance of further studies to estimate the positive and negative predictive values of these biomarkers and deepen the understanding of the immune response in tuberculosis.
