Abstract in English
Background: The literature proposes that regular nut consumption can promote beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk markers. Pecan is among the most commonly known nuts and has a very interesting nutritional profile. However, the relationship between pecans and obesity is not yet fully elucidated. Objective: to evaluate the metabolic effects of consuming a diet enriched with pecans, compared to a control diet in adults with obesity. Methods: a six-week randomized controlled clinical trial was performed in adults with obesity. Participants were allocated into two groups: nuts group and control group. Both groups received qualitative recommendations for healthy eating. In addition, the nuts group was instructed to include 30 grams per day of pecans in the diet during the six weeks of intervention. Body composition, lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, insulin resistance and oxidative stress were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: Twenty-four individuals were analyzed, thirteen in the nuts group and eleven in the control group. Body weight, body mass index, total cholesterol, high and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose and insulin resistance did not show statistically significant changes after the intervention. Regarding the oxidative stress parameters, both groups showed a statistically significant increase in PON-1 after the intervention, the nuts group (p = 0.001) and the control group (p = 0.004). In addition, a statistically significant reduction in TBARS levels was observed in the nuts group after the intervention (p = 0.020). However, these changes (PON-1 and TBARS) were not statistically significant when comparing groups (nuts and control). Conclusion: In comparison with the diet performed by the control group, the inclusion of 30 grams per day of pecans in the diet of the nuts group for six weeks did not promote statistically significant changes in the metabolic parameters associated with obesity evaluated.
