A hidrocefalia é definida como um desequilíbrio entre a produção e a absorção do líquido cefalorraquidiano no interior dos ventrículos cerebrais e do espaço subaracnóideo. Tal condição causa sérios danos às estruturas do SNC e gera graves distúrbios neurológicos que nem sempre são revertidos com o tratamento instituído. Por este motivo, a busca por medidas neuroprotetoras é de extrema necessidade. O medicamento Edaravone já se mostrou benéfico na hidrocefalia experimental, porém, a associação deste medicamento com a cirurgia de derivação liquórica ainda não foi testada. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar em ratos jovens hidrocefálicos o efeito neuroprotetor do Edaravone juntamente com um sistema de derivação liquórica. Foram utilizados ratos com sete dias de vida submetidos à hidrocefalia pela injeção de caulim intracisternal, divididos em cinco grupos compostos com dez animais em cada: controle (C), hidrocefálico não tratado (HNT), hidrocefálico tratado com Edaravone (20mg/Kg/dia) (HTE), hidrocefálico tratado com derivação liquórica (HTD) e hidrocefálico tratado com derivação e Edaravone (HTDE). Foram realizados testes comportamentais, avaliação histológica, imunoistoquímica e bioquímica. Os resultados demonstraram que o Edaravone, especialmente quando associado à cirurgia de derivação liquórica, promove neuroproteção em ratos hidrocefálicos jovens, por reduzir a astrogliose reativa e diminuir a morte celular.

Hydrocephalus is defined as an imbalance between the production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid within the cerebral ventricles and the subarachnoid space. Such a condition causes serious damage to the CNS structures and generates serious neurological disorders that are not always reversed with the treatment instituted. For this reason, the search for neuroprotective measures is extremely necessary. The drug Edaravone has already been shown to be beneficial in experimental hydrocephalus, however, the association of this drug with CSF derivative surgery has not yet been tested. The objective of the work was to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of Edaravone in young hydrocephalic rats together with a CSF derivation system. Seven-day-old rats subjected to hydrocephalus by intracisternal kaolin injection were used, divided into five groups composed of ten animals in each: control (C), untreated hydrocephalic (HNT), hydrocephalic treated with Edaravone (20mg / kg / day) (HTE), hydrocephalic treated with CSF derivation (HTD) and hydrocephalic treated with derivation and Edaravone (HTDE). Behavioral tests, histological, immunohistochemical and biochemical tests were performed. The results showed that Edaravone, especially when associated with CSF surgery, promotes neuroprotection in young hydrocephalic rats, by reducing reactive astrogliosis and decreasing cell death.
