Abstract in English
In Brazil, treatment for gastric cancer is based mainly on North American and European guidelines, but the Brazilian population served by the Unified Health System may have its own characteristics that may require adaptation of protocols imported from other sociocultural and economic realities. Therefore, it is essential to know the epidemiology of this disease in our context. This study aims to analyze the epidemiology of patients undergoing treatment for stomach cancer. A cohort, retrospective, observational study was developed in order to analyze patients diagnosed with stomach cancer, through data collection from the Hospital Cancer Registry and medical records, attended between 2012 and 2017, at Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo (HCFMRP/USP). Collected data included sociodemographic, clinical, anatomopathological and treatment variables. Descriptive analysis of the distribution of continuous variables will be presented through measures of central tendency (mean, median and mode), measures of dispersion (standard deviation and coefficient of variation) and for categorical variables, absolute frequencies and percentages will be presented. In the exploratory analysis of overall survival, the Kaplan Meier method and the log-rank test will be used to compare survival functions, assuming a significance level of 5%. Stomach cancer with the histological type of adenocarcinoma remains considerable as one of the most incident and high mortality malignant neoplasms. The overall survival found in this study for stomach cancer that underwent the treatment was 40% in a period of 60 months, the population that underwent the surgery had advanced staging III and IV in 39.5% of the patients, and at the admission of this patient in the service 18.7% are diagnosed with metastasis, having an impact on survival. This may reflect the difficulty in accessing early diagnosis. It is expected that these data will be relevant for the planning of public health measures, aiming at a selection of actions to be applied to patients with stomach cancer.
