Abstract in English
Albino male rats were trained in an active avoidan ce conditioned situation until consolidation of learning --stable performance (SP). Afterwards, implantation of guide-cannulas through the skull both uni or bilaterally was performed, at the level of striatum (n. caudatus-putamen, CPU and/or globus pallidus, GP). After surgical recuperation they were retrained to regain SP. Subsequently they were tested, in the same avoidance situation for periods of 0-28 min (CPU) and 0-8 min (GP), immediately after injection of ul of the following Solutions, with 24 hs intervals among them: 1) saline solution (SS); 2) sodium thiopental (T); 3) sodium thiopental/hydrocortisone (T/HC) and 4) hydrocortisone (HC). Every rat was its own control. The results showed that under the action of thiopental a significant decrease in performance occurred; an ipsilateral rotational body novement was also observed. The duration of both behaviors was lower than 10 min. The intensity and duration of rotational behavior maintained a positive correlation with the performance decrease. It was concluded that: 1) The ipsiversive movement was probably due to blockade of the dopaminergic transmission in the striatum, by the barbiturate. 2) The decrease in performance was caused by motor incoordination, and not by interference on the retention mechanisms of learning or on the processess of complex nature related with basal ganglia. 3) The microinjection of thiopental in the striatum of rat in the observed behaviors had an effect of less duration than a microinfusion in the same structure in monkey, respecting to complex adaptative behavior. 4) Hydrocortisone injected sinultaneously with thiopental neutralized its action; when used alone hydrocortisone maintained or did not influence avoidance performance, and no elicited motor alterations. A possible mechanism for the action of hydrocortisone and thiopental was discussed.
