Abstract in English
In the packaging industry, the strategy of reuse is not new, especially in the business-to-business (B2B) market, where pallets, crates and barrels are commonly reused, resulting in significant long-term savings, both in terms of capital and natural resources. However, the ever increasing demand for alternatives to help reduce the problem of single-use packaging has also been encouraging the research for innovative business-to-consumer (B2C) reusable packaging solutions. From the producer's perspective, this approach allows high--quality materials to remain in the economy, and encourages systematic innovations throughout the production chain both of which can result in reduced logistics and production costs while customers, can benefit from superior, personalized consumer experiences, reduced acquisition costs, loyalty programs and reduced household waste. Therefore, this study presents the current state of the art in research and development of reusable packaging in B2C models, focusing on the fast-moving consumer goods market, relying on data obtained by related literature review, opportunistic, semi-structured interviews with users, web survey and research conducted in packaging design award databases. The main contributions of the research are: (i) the overview of possible approaches and business models for a circular economy of packaging centered on the reuse strategy; (ii) the highlighting of the potentials of and difficulties involved in the implementation of such systems, from the design perspective; and (iii) the proposal of a framework systematizing the main design parameters that can assist in the development of reusable packaging in B2C models, in order to guide designers, marketing professionals and decision makers to arrive at suitable reusable solutions.
