Wooden truck body
Abstract in English
In several regions of the country it is possible to find, in wooden bodies, abstract patterns that ornament Brazilian trucks. These designs, popularly known as 'filetes', are created inside small factories, integrating the production process of wooden truck bodies. This feature differentiates filetes from other ornamental or informative elements that are added to the vehicle once the customer is in possession of the truck and it's body, such as paintings on mud flaps, lettering added to bumpers, stickers and other kinds of customization. The general purpose of the research reported here was to describe and analyze the practice of ornamenting wooden truck bodies with filetes, done in truck body factories in the state of São Paulo, in what regards their visual aspects; creation, production and circulation processes; and also taking into account the social relations between agents who participate, directly or indirectly, in this practice. The re- search, of an ethnographic nature, focused on the investigation of fifteen wooden truck body factories, and was developed through in- terviews with relevant agents (such as filete painters, truck body factory owners, truck drivers and street market traders); examination of photographs of truck bodies found in the archives of the companies visited or made during visits; video record of truck body ornamenta- tion; and immersion in groups and channels geared towards truck drivers on social networks. In the end, the research obtained relevant results for understanding the production of filetes in the state of São Paulo. The process of manufacture and ornamentation of truck bodies was described according to its different stages, techniques and materials used. Shapes, structures of spatial organization, colors and color combinations recurring to those ornaments were identified. The roles of wooden truck body factory customers, of filete painters and of wooden truck body manufacturers were investigated as agents and patients in the practice of truck body ornamentation.
