As favelas são territórios complexos caracterizados pela autoconstrução, pela precariedade e pela negação dos padrões urbanos normativos do Estado; são o resultado das ausências, das negligências e das incompletudes das políticas públicas no que tange aos serviços de infraestrutura urbana e aos dos direitos sociais plenos. As favelas são também caracterizadas pela sua riqueza cultural, pela pluralidade dos sujeitos em suas diversas expressões simbólicas; é onde há uma presença predominante de negros, e, nesse sentido, são territórios de luta desses povos contra a negação de sua própria sobrevivência e existência. Nesses lugares, diversos grupos e movimentos se manifestam por meio da arte e da cultura; expressam suas formas de resistência e de luta por transformações espaciais coletivas e pessoais. Nesses lugares, os sujeitos atuam coletivamente para enfrentar e suprir as ausências; para melhorar a qualidade de vida; para reivindicar, entre outras demandas, a cultura e a estética como direitos básicos. Esta pesquisa tem como referência duas experiências de coletivos que atuam com arte e cultura na favela do Morro do Papagaio/Aglomerado Santa Lúcia em Belo Horizonte. Ela busca entender os mecanismos sociais que sustentam essas práticas de participação coletiva, de colaboração, de sociabilidade e de comunalidade como saberes que possam trazer reflexões para o Design e contribuir para uma prática autônoma e integrada à realidade local. Este não é um estudo sobre a favela, mas sobre minha experiência de engajamento em Design tendo como base esses saberes existentes nesse lugar. É uma busca por um saber-fazer comum, situado, construído no mundo, junto às pessoas. O que se pretende é chamar a atenção para um pensamento e uma prática de design que atuam a partir das condições existentes nesses contextos sociais e dos processos ativos nesses territórios e que contribuem para o fortalecimento das identidades, das relações entre as pessoas e entre elas e os lugares onde vivem.

Favelas are complex territories characterized by self-construction, precariousness, and the denial of the normative urban standards of the State; they are the result of the absence, negligence, and incompleteness of public policies regarding urban infrastructure services and full social rights. Favelas are also characterized by their cultural richness, by the plurality of subjects in their various symbolic expressions, where there is a predominant presence of black people, and, in this sense, they are territories of struggle of these peoples against the denial of their own survival and existence. In these places, different groups and movements manifest themselves through art and culture; they express their forms of resistance and struggle for collective and personal spatial transformations. In these places, subjects act collectively to face and suppress absences; to improve the quality of life; to claim, among other demands, culture, and aesthetics as a basic right. This research is based on two experiences of collectives that work with art and culture in the favela of Morro do Papagaio/Aglomerado Santa Lúcia in Belo Horizonte. It seeks to understand the social mechanisms that support these practices of collective participation, collaboration, sociability, and commonality as knowledge that can bring reflections to Design and contribute to an autonomous practice integrated to the local reality. This is not a study about the favela, but about my experience of engagement in Design based on the knowledge existing in this place. It is a search for a common know-how, situated, built in the world, with the people. The aim is to draw attention to a Design thinking and practice that act from the existing conditions in these social contexts and the active processes in these territories and that contribute to the strengthening of identities, relationships between people and between them and the places where they live.
