Title in Portuguese
Cidade em corte: linearidade e verticalidade no projeto urbano
Keywords in Portuguese
Infraestrutura
Linearidade
Projeto urbano
Seção vertical
Verticalidade

Abstract in English
The main objective of this research is to understand the role played by a graphic representation tool, the section, in the field of urban design and its role in clarifying the vertical relationships present in the cities. For this purpose, the technical, social, spatial and economic demands of different histo- rical contexts, which made the reasoning of the city through its vertical section opportune and necessary are pointed out. To accomplish these goals, key moments on the de- velopment of design disciplines were identified. Together, these moments illustrate the growing complexity of the elements that constitute cities in their various layers. In this sense, the underground infrastructure networks and the introduction of the skyscraper in the architectural lexicon stand out. Through the incorporation of the vertical section into the urban design instruments, urban projects that ex- press their organizational capacity regarding the morphology of cities, both in linear and vertical structures, were identified, and in doing so was revealed how the design discipline can be used both as a way of constructing knowledge and formulating critical thinking.
