Movimento estudantil

University extension
Abstract in English
In Latin America, public universities have played a pivotal role not only in the educational realm but also in structuring national states. University extension, an essential pillar of higher education, is the means by which the university interacts with society. It is necessary to understand university extension in Latin America in light of a history marked by specific social, political, and cultural nuances of each country. In this scenario, students emerge as protagonists, aiming for a university extension that goes beyond the dissemination of knowledge and aspires to promote social transformations. However, there is a growing distance between students and the political formulation of this academic function. This study has two main objectives: to investigate the role of students in the historical construction of Latin American university extension in the 20th century and to establish a dialogue with Ecuadorian university students about how to achieve transformative university extension from an ethical-pedagogical perspective. To address this issue, we turn to the theories of educator Paulo Freire, emphasizing that students should be at the center of this transformative process.
