Base do esquema teórico de Lucio Costa, a ideia de tradição pode ser vista como fo que o guia através da modernidade brasileira entre 1930 e 1960. Nesse período, quando a cultura no país é tomada por uma "vontade construtiva geral", vive-se entre a acelerada renovação e o apagamento permanente de tudo que fca para trás. "Tradição" é a resposta de Lucio Costa a este dilema, em três momentos diferentes. Primeiro, como o elo que vence o isolamento e o atraso, que se enlaça no desígnio corbuseano de uma América "dos latinos", na herança mais remota dos construtores ultramarinos, na presença irredutível dos jesuítas e na evolução do saber-fazer colonial. Depois, reescrita, absorvendo o choque inevitável com o caráter espetacular da obra de Niemeyer e a consequente necessidade de incorporar a fgura do gênio nacional - desdobramento que é paradoxalmente acompanhado de sua mais profunda imersão no passado dos construtores artesãos por meio das viagens às aldeias e vilas portuguesas. Por fm, como terceiro momento, com o concurso para Brasília (1956), eis que se vê lançado novamente ao centro dos acontecimentos, ocasião em que apresenta, ao nosso ver, uma terceira tradição, ou, como chamamos aqui, antitradição, dadas as peculiares características que movem seu raciocínio sobre a imagem que deve ter a capital do país e os dilemas de formação que insistem em assombrar a modernidade nesta parte do mundo.

The idea of tradition is the base of the theoretical approach of Lucio Costa. It can be seen as a common thread that guides him through the Brazilian Modernity between 1930 and 1960. In this period, when the culture in the country is taken by a "general constructive will", one lives between the accelerated renovation and the permanent erasure of everything that is left behind. "Tradition" is Lucio Costa's answer to this dilemma, in three diferent moments. First, as the link that overcomes isolation and backwardness, which is linked to the Corbusian design of an America "of the Latinos", the more remote heritage of overseas builders, the irreducible presence of the Jesuits and the evolution of colonial know-how. Then, rewritten absorbing the inevitable shock with the spectacular character of Niemeyer's work and the consequent need to incorporate the fgure of the national genius. An outcome that is paradoxically accompanied by its deepest immersion in the past of builder-artisans through trips to Portuguese villages and towns. Finally, as a third moment, when already away and reclusive, with the contest for Brasília, he is again thrown to the center of events, occasion when he presents, in our view, a third tradition, or as we call it here, anti-tradition, given the peculiar characteristics that move his reasoning on the image that the capital of the country must have and the dilemmas of formation that insist on haunting modernity in this part of the world.
