Esta pesquisa parte da reflexão sobre o livro As cidades invisíveis, de Italo Calvino. Trata-se de uma narrativa que permite ao leitor criar múltiplas imagens das cidades relatadas, construídas de acordo com o seu repertório visual e cultural. Em um processo de sucessivas construções e desconstruções, Calvino conduz o leitor a perceber determinado sentido da cidade para, em seguida, surpreendê-lo ao expor um sentido totalmente contrário, criando um método singular de combinação de elementos opostos e complementares, um exercício de desprogramar rotinas e de ver o mundo com os olhos da novidade. Este é um estudo sobre a multiplicidade da imagem da cidade que se propõe a criar imagens da cidade por meio de processos combinatórios e generativos para transcrever conceitos abstratos presentes no livro de Calvino. De forma análoga à narrativa, os conceitos apresentados estão acompanhados de seu oposto, seguindo o princípio da dualidade, segundo o qual os opostos se completam e são interdependentes. A pesquisa é composta por um estudo teórico sobre os conceitos abordados por Calvino e por um conjunto de imagens da cidade que transcrevem esses conceitos. Para preservar a identidade múltipla da urbe, aplicam-se diferentes métodos combinatórios e generativos para produzir tais imagens, rejeitando a ideia de síntese, em favor de uma visão diversa, variada e múltipla da cidade. Cada um dos experimentos generativos apresentados possui sua própria estrutura combinatória e seu conjunto de regras inerentes. O sentido desse método projetual foi construído com uma intensa atividade experimental, testando inúmeras alternativas e exaurindo qualquer certeza de método absoluto. O resultado são 11 experimentos gráficos que reinterpretam os temas presentes no livro de Calvino e evidenciam a simetria e o dualismo de sua estrutura. Apesar de o estudo ter sido minuciosamente projetado, o mais importante não é o fato de encerrar-se em um produto único e harmonioso, mas de promover uma pluralidade de leituras e uma multiplicidade de interpretações.

This research is based on a reflection on the book The invisible cities, by Italo Calvino. It allows the reader to create multiple images of the cities mentioned in the book, which were constructed according to their visual and cultural repertoire. With successive constructions and deconstructions, Calvino leads the reader to sense the city in a certain way and then surprises him by exposing a totally opposite sense, creating a unique method to combine opposing and complementary elements, to deprogram routines and to see the world through the eyes of novelty. This is a study about the multiplicity of the image of the city, which proposes to create such an image of the city by combinatorial and generative processes in order to transcribe abstract concepts from Calvino's book. Correspondingly to the narrative, concepts are presented with their opposite, following the principle of duality, in which opposites complete each other and are interdependent. This research consists of a theoretical study of the concepts addressed by Calvino and of a set of images of the city that transcribe these concepts. To preserve the multiple identity of the city, different combinatorial and generative methods are used to produce such images, rejecting the idea of synthesis in favor of a diverse, varied, and multiple view of the city. Each of the generative experiments has its own combinatorial structure and inherent set of rules. The idea of this design method was built with intense experimental activity by testing countless alternatives and exhausting any certainty of an absolute method. The study results in 11 graphic experiments that reinterpret the themes from Calvino's book and highlight the symmetry and dualism of their structure. Although this study has been carefully designed, in a single and harmonious product, is less important than promoting diverse readings and a multiplicity of interpretations.
