Abstract in English
This research investigates how media architecture can be used to promote new meanings, experiences and ways of occupying the public space. From a historical perspective, it analyzes the concept of media architecture, and its relations with art and the public space, pointing out emblematic examples of projects with urban digital media, discussing political and environmental issues. It reflects on participative forms, ways of people engagement, urban strategies and practices that aim to create collective experiences in the city, approaching the concept of the ladder of participation by Sherry Arnstein and the distribution of the sensible by Jacques Rancière. As a way to explore aspects of the research related to the participatory modes of the media architecture, three experimental practices were carried out that address the aesthetics of the database in the Masp.Etc.Br project, the creation of collaborative media architecture in the 20 Data Pixels Workshop, and use of smart technology and participatory sensing data in the Rook project, taking as the reference of investigation the Aesthetics of Participation framework of Fritsch, Grönvall and Breinbjerg. The research tensions political questions about collective processes, smart technology and smart citizenship, critically discussing the use of social technologies as a vector of transformation and spatial significance.
