O presente estudo discute a centralidade da vegetação e de categorias a ela relacionadas como paisagem e natureza na produção literária, artística e paisagística do modernismo paulista das décadas de 1920 e 30. A partir de obras de importantes artistas e intelectuais do período, a exemplo de Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, Raul Bopp, Blaise Cendrars, Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Lasar Segall, Mina Klabin Warchavchik e Flávio de Carvalho, investiga como as plantas, enquanto verdadeiros símbolos vegetais, apontam para novas relações entre natureza e cultura; ajudam, ainda, a desvelar as contradições de um processo de modernização marcado por conflitos e desigualdades, e contribuem para a libertação de uma série de recalques históricos, sociais e étnicos presentes na sociedade brasileira. Com base em revisões bibliográficas e em um extensivo levantamento botânico-pictórico realizado em gravuras, pinturas, desenhos, poemas, romances, fotografias e projetos, nos quais aparecem dezenas de plantas , fez-se uma reflexão sobre os significados e as formas de representação de cinco espécies ou famílias botânicas, correspondendo aos cinco capítulos desta tese. Assim, o trabalho faz o seguinte movimento: do café (Coffea arabica) à vitória-régia (Victoria amazonica), passando pelas palmeiras (Arecaceae), bananeiras (Musa sp) e cactos (Cactaceae). Nesse movimento, a vegetação é lida, vista e sentida ora sob a perspectiva da exploração colonial e da dependência econômica e cultural, ora sob uma perspectiva emancipatória; ora relacionada à civilização à europeia, ora à civilização tropical; ora à cidade modernizada, ora à floresta imaginada virgem; ora à concupiscência masculina, ora à resistência feminina; ora reportando-se aos tempos presentes, ora a tempos ancestrais, entremeados de expectativas de futuro.

his study discusses the prominence of plants and certain related categories such as landscape and nature in the works of literature, art and landscape architecture by São Paulos modernist movement of the 1920s and 30s. Based on works by important artists and intellectuals of the period including but not limited to Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, Raul Bopp, Blaise Cendrars, Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Lasar Segall, Mina Klabin Warchavchik and Flávio de Carvalho we investigate how botanical specimens, appropriated by the modernists as veritable plant symbols, point toward new connections between nature and culture, help unveil the contradictions underlying a process of social modernization tainted by conflicts and inequalities, and contribute to the emancipation from often-repressed historical, social and ethnical issues of Brazilian society. By means of bibliographical reviews, as well as an extensive botanical, literary and iconographic survey of engravings, paintings, drawings, poems, novels, photographs and projects an effort that enabled us to pinpoint dozens of plants , we developed a reflection on the meanings and representational modes associated with five plant species or botanical families, each corresponding to a specific chapter of the thesis. In this sense, the study attempts to develop a coherent narrative permeated by the coffee plant (Coffea arabica), the palm tree (Arecaceae), the banana tree (Musa sp), the cactus (Cactacea), and the Victoria regia (Victoria amazonica), showing how these plant symbols have been interpreted, seen and felt sometimes from the perspective of colonialism and economic and cultural dependence, sometimes from an emancipatory perspective; sometimes related to European civilization, sometimes to tropical civilization; sometimes to the modernized city, sometimes to the supposedly virgin forest; now to male concupiscence, now to female resistance; sometimes referring to the centrality of the present, sometimes to ancestral times, laden with expectations for the future.
