Desde a segunda metade do século XIX até a contemporaneidade, o fenômeno metropolitano esteve e ainda está associado a dificuldades relacionadas à esfera subjetiva e sensível. Não obstante a capacidade de identificar situações tipicamente metropolitanas (os espaços e os lugares singulares das metrópoles), diferentes autores reconhecem, em simultaneidade ao surgimento das grandes cidades e à sua consolidação, o enfraquecimento das dimensões sensíveis, o embotamento dos sentimentos ou ainda o esvaziamento do sentido estético relacionado à experiência metropolitana (CACCIARI, 1972, 2010; MUMFORD, 2004; SIMMEL, 1973) e à vida nas metrópoles (LYNCH, 1972; HILLMAN, 1993). Diante do quadro apresentado, esta tese parte da hipótese de que as grandes cidades proporcionaram e ainda proporcionam situações para sua apreensão estética, indicando a possibilidade de estabelecer relações sensíveis com os espaços, lugares e acontecimentos que particularmente caracterizam o fenômeno metropolitano. A partir de reflexões teóricas e referências artísticas, literárias e poéticas, a tese organiza-se em torno do reconhecimento de circunstâncias específicas em que podem ser observadas experiências estéticas com a metrópole. Embora este trabalho trate de situações localizadas em diferentes metrópoles, a hipótese refere-se ao espaço geral das grandes cidades, reafirmando o intento de investigar a possibilidade da expressão estética do fenômeno metropolitano e demais aspectos que se desdobram de sua experiência sensível. Para tanto, os dois primeiros capítulos da tese voltam-se à apresentação dos principais aspectos constitutivos do fenômeno metropolitano e ao reconhecimento da sensibilidade que persiste na experiência estética das grandes cidades notadamente entre o final do século XIX e o início do século XX. Em seguida, o trabalho promove o reconhecimento de possibilidades relacionadas à experiência estética da metrópole com ênfase nas descontinuidades, falhas e ruídos dos espaços metropolitanos, reunindo elementos capazes de retratar sensivelmente as áreas centrais e os subúrbios metropolitanos. Finalmente, o capítulo final da tese dedica-se a explorar expressões estéticas relacionadas à metrópole de São Paulo, coletando excertos e imagens que repercutem impressões sensíveis sobre a cidade enquanto metrópole.

Since the second half of the 19th century until the present day, the metropolitan phenomenon still is associated with difficulties related to the subjective and sensitive dimension. Despite the capability to identify typical metropolitan situations (the unique spaces and places of the metropolis), simultaneously with the emergence of big cities and their consolidation, different authors recognize the weakening of sensitive senses, the loss of feelings or even the emptiness of the aesthetic meaning of the metropolitan experience (CACCIARI, 1972, 2010; MUMFORD, 2004; SIMMEL, 1973) and to life in the metropolis (LYNCH, 1972; HILLMAN, 1993). Facing this framework, this work is based on the hypothesis that large cities have provided and still provide situations for aesthetic apprehension, indicating the possibility of establishing sensitive interactions with the spaces, places and events that particularly characterize the metropolitan phenomenon. Based on theoretical reflections and artistic, literary and poetic references, the thesis is organized around the identification of specific circumstances in which aesthetic metropolitan experiences can be noted. Although this work deals with situations placed in different metropolises, the hypothesis refers to the general space of big cities, stating the purpose of investigating the possibility of aesthetic metropolitan phenomenon expression and other aspects that unfold from its sensitive experience. Thus, the first two chapters of the thesis focus on the key constitutive aspects of the metropolitan phenomenon and on the recognition of the sensibility that persists in the aesthetic experience of the big cities particularly between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Next, the work promotes the recognition of the aesthetic metropolitan experience with emphasis on the discontinuities, gaps and roars of metropolitan spaces, bringing together a set of elements capable to sensitively portray the central areas and the metropolitan suburbs. Finally, the final chapter of the thesis is dedicated to exploring aesthetic expressions related to the metropolis of São Paulo, gathering extracts and images that echo sensitive impressions about the city as a metropolis.
