Abstract in English
This dissertation is a study on the history of the Municipal Stadium of São Paulo, the Pacaembu, between its opening in 1940 and 1970. As part of a public policy that aimed at the construction of sporting complexes in the city, the Pacaembu was inaugurated on April 27th of 1940 as one of the main urban wonders of the growing metropolis. Seen as a symbol of the modernity achieved by São Paulo, the Municipal Stadium became the most important venue for the paulista football, accommodating thousands of spectators and playing a major role in the popularization of football as a mass sport. However, during the 1950s the local press starts disqualify the Pacaembu as obsolete and unable to support the needs of the city. Through the analysis of the history of the Pacaembu Stadium, this research seeks to understand the interests involved in the construction of the greatest sporting complex in Latin America at its time and the processes involving this sudden change of public perception, from modern to obsolete.
