Este trabalho apresenta e discute a atuação da Companhia City - fundada em 1912 como City of San Paulo Improvements and Freehold Land Company e hoje denominada City de Desenvolvimento Ltda. - no processo de expansão e crescimento do território urbano de São Paulo com ênfase na segunda metade do século XX. A atuação da empresa se amplia no território a partir da década de 1950, ultrapassando as fronteiras da cidade e mesmo do estado de São Paulo, ao mesmo tempo que ocorrem alterações significativas em sua estrutura administrativa, com a associação a novos grupos empresariais e novos investidores financeiros. Nota-se como esse processo de expansão conforma e é fruto da reorganização nas formas de atuação da City, que permitiu à empresa diversificar seus empreendimentos e promover incorporações imobiliárias, de modo a abranger novos territórios além-rios na cidade de São Paulo, onde ainda havia ampla disponibilidade de áreas livres. Evidencia-se como nesse percurso a City se consolida como um agente indutor da transformação da Zona Norte, atuando em conjunto aos demais grupos empresarias presentes no entorno, em busca de novos negócios e atraindo novas camadas da população para esta localidade. A análise detida dos seus loteamentos naquela região - que deram origem a novos bairrosjardins a partir da década de 1970: Parque Nações Unidas (1975), City América (1979/1989), City Recanto Anastácio (1979/1989), Jardim dos Pinheiros (1982) e City Empresarial Jaraguá (1992) - permite também discutir permanências e rupturas no chamado "padrão City", bem como reconhecer a importância da empresa na consolidação da legislação urbanística em São Paulo.

The research presents and discusses the actions of Companhia City - founded in 1912 as City of San Paulo Improvements and Freehold Land Company and nowadays denominated as City de Desenvolvimento Ltda. - in the process of expansion and growth of the urban territory of São Paulo with an emphasis on the second half of the 20th century. The company's trajectory has expanded in the territory since the 1950s, going beyond the borders of the city and also the state of São Paulo at the same time that significant changes in its administrative structure occur, with the association with new business groups and new financial investors. It can be seen how this process conforms and is the result of a reorganization in the ways that the City operates, which allowed the company to diversify its undertakings and promote real estate developments, in order to cover new territories beyond the rivers in the city of São Paulo, where there was still wide availability of free areas. It is evident that along this path, the City consolidated itself as an inducing agent for the transformation of the North Zone, acting together with the other business groups present in the surroundings, in search of new businesses and attracting new groups of the population to this location. The analysis of their subdivisions in that region, which gave rise to new garden-neighborhoods from the 1970s: Parque Nações Unidas (1975), City América (1979/1989), City Recanto Anastácio (1979/1989), Jardim dos Pinheiros (1982) and City Empresarial Jaraguá (1992) -, also allows to discuss permanences and ruptures in the socalled "City standard", as well as to recognize its importance in the consolidation of urban legislation in São Paulo.
