Esta tese investiga diferentes dimensões da experiência urbana na Rua Augusta entre os anos 1880 e 1930. Partimos da cidade para ver a rua e depois, de dentro da rua olhar para fora e ver a cidade. Concluímos que a rua não é uma linha, mas o resultado dos muitos cruzamentos que fazem dela um objeto vivo e mutante. Estudamos os espaços que a configuram como um artefato urbano, tendo em vista as tensões políticas e sociais, os campos de forças e as múltiplas representações que atuaram no fazer desta rua. Em termos operacionais, buscamos articular a análise da atividade econômica de um grupo, com um lugar - enquanto espaço socialmente experimentado - aos processos que formaram a malha urbana e os fluxos que atravessam a cidade. A análise cruzada das diferentes escalas manteve foco no fazer da Rua Augusta como espaço do cotidiano e como lugar da experiência de urbanidade.

This dissertation investigates different dimensions of urban experience on Rua Augusta between the 1880s and 1930s. We start at the scale of the city to examine the street and then, from within the street, we look outward and view the city. We find that the street is not a line, but the manifestation of the many crossings that make it a living and changing object. We study the spaces that configure the street as an urban artifact, maintaining a view of the political and social tensions, and the fields of dispute that acted in its making. Through its historical trajectory, multiple representations gave intelligibility to the social groups along Rua Augusta. In methodological terms, we seek to articulate the analysis of the economic activity of a group, with a specific place - a socially experienced space - with the study of the processes which formed the urban fabric and the flows that run through the city. The cross-analysis of different scales reveal Rua Augusta as a space for everyday life and a place for the experience of urbanity.
