Abstract in English
This work addresses the reasons behind the revolts that took place in 2013, unleashed against the increase in bus fares. It analyses the relationships between urban life, mobility systems, territorial organization and political and economic arrangements in Brazil. In order to do so, it investigates the countrys urban history with a focus on forms of displacement cars, buses, trains, bicycles, roads , framing the hypothesis that such elements are central to the constitution of forms of life. Its thesis is that since redemocratization Brazil has been marked by two conflicting trends. On the one hand, a privatist form of life, inherited from the military dictatorship and a long history of spacial segregation, and secured by gated communities, shopping malls, private cars and private education, health and leisure. On the other hand, an aspiration for democratic and rights-based forms of life, which sprouted at the time of redemocratization and bloomed during Lulas presidential mandates. The clash between these trends resulted in a series of conflicts, which intensi!ed in the early 2010s and burst in the streets in 2013. This work also aims to contribute to the characterization of the constellation of struggles that formed in the period. It expects to throw light onto the meanings of the June protests as they escaped the control of the organized left. In that sense, it presents a database in which more than 6,000 posters displayed on the streets were collected and analyzed.
