Abstract in English
This work aims to reflect on urban culture in the city of São Paulo from the reading of sociability practices in food-related spaces. These spaces reflect the diversity of the city and are inserted into its quotidian by forms of use and appropriation that exceed the act of eating. This study takes the neighborhood scale as the locus at which the urban space is experienced daily, spotlighting the bakeries. As spaces dedicated to the manufacture and sale of bread, a basic everyday item, bakeries are places attended constantly by most of the residents of the region where they are located, thus participating on the processes of constructing significations for the collective imaginary and experience of the place. This research proposes to comprehend the dynamics involving the bakery, its actors, and the neighborhood in which it is located focusing on the study of four commercial establishments in the Jardim Bonfiglioli neighborhood, in the West Zone of São Paulo. Through the articulation between the histories of each of these bakeries and the neighborhood itself, the daily dynamics of these stores, and the relationships of residents, customers, and employees with these places, it is proposed a reading of the bakery as a window to look at the city from three analytical entries: work, consumption and sociability.
