Keywords in Portuguese

Edifício residencial
Ergonomia
Transtorno autístico

Residences for people diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): architecture and requirements.

Home design
Abstract in English
The objective of this research is to develop design recommendations for houses that meet the needs of people with development disorder, particularly those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To accomplish this, the research's intent is to understand how the ergonomics, acoustic, thermal, lightning and visual comfort affect the daily life of this type of user, thus allowing the documentation of the main elements that should be considered when designing for this population. The study is focused on residences for the most severe cases of ASD. This choice was made based on the fact that this typology has the most unique characteristics, in contrast with residences for those with higher functional level, which are more similar to homes of neurotypical people. The results of this research were obtained based on bibliographic review, qualitative evaluation of some residences built for people diagnosed with ASD in the national territory and the application of interviews and questionnaires with professionals that have worked in residential arrangements for people with ASD and with parents or legal guardians of those residents. The literature reviewed included works about housing for people with disabilities, the characteristics of ASD and its implications on the independence and adulthood of an individual with autism. The data collected through the bibliography, interviews, questionnaires and case studies was later compared to elaborate design recommendations, thus creating a referential for future research and projects in this area.
