Vilanova Artigas Building
Abstract in English
Faced with uncertainties regarding the structural behavior of the Vilanova Artigas building, the research investigates the hypothesis that, given the main interventions that have occurred, it remains compatible with the one for which it was conceived. From a deductive approach of structural investigation of the heritage, five representative analytical models of the structure of the building in different periods were elaborated, defined based on the history of the main interventions to which it was submitted since the 1970s. It was concluded that, locally, on the roof, the increase in load involved in the interventions that took place led to an increase of around 20% in the maximum internal bending efforts and also in the beams' maximum displacements. In the longitudinal frames, the maximum bending efforts did not reach a variation greater than 5% in relation to the original conditions simulated for the structure. Regarding the foundations, those arranged under the external pillars of the longitudinal facades were the most sensitive to variations in roof loading, reaching about 10% of difference between models. With regard to the comparison with the loads foreseen in the structural design documentation for the foundations, there are cases in which they were significantly exceeded, reaching loading increments of around 70%. Regarding the sensitivity of the building to 2nd order global effects, it was found to be greater in the transverse direction, but still negligible according to the z coefficient that evaluates it, which resulted in less than 1.10 in all representative models of the interventions contemplated in the work. Finally, the research made it possible to detect structural vulnerabilities for which monitoring and complementary investigation approaches are recommended, in order to corroborating the results achieved and subsidizing future intervention procedures in the building.
