Abstract in English
The origin of the urbanism of gardne-quarters in São Paulo goes back to the first decade of the current century, when the plan of the Jardim América began to be put in practice by the City of San Paulo Improvements and Freehold Land Company, later Companhia City. A research has been made on the anglo-american inception and roots of this kind of urban model, as well on the local circumstances and pre-existing conditions for its acceptance. The original project of this garden-quarter was analyzed as well as its transformations and the various architectural characteristics which have been found there in correspondence to successive periods from 1916 through 1961, specially in the twenties through the fourties. The fundamental creative role of the british architect Barry Parker is emphasized and a due mention is made of the series of architects whose designs led to the concrete garden-quarter.
