Este trabalho analisa a questão do patrimônio cultural a partir de um edifício e sua integração com a cidade, e representa um esforço de problematizar as relações passado/presente em bens tombados. O bem escolhido foi a Hospedaria dos Imigrantes, um edifício do final do século XIX, localizado na cidade de São Paulo. Esta Hospedaria é emblemática por ser um exemplar da arquitetura eclética, vinculada ao desejo de modernização do país e, principalmente, por simbolizar relações que a sociedade brasileira pretendia establecer com o mundo do trabalho. A partir dos valores apontados pelo processo de tombamento são analisados os usos do conjunto da Hospedaria e sua inserção urbana. Especificamente, como esses valores são percebidos ainda hoje no bem tombado, e como são atualizados nos seus usos do momento, albergue e museu, e em relação a seus personagens, imigrantes, migrantes e carentes. A percepção daquilo que foi tombado e valorizado, e daquilo que não o foi, é o enfoque principal deste trabalho.

This dissertation analyses the cultural heritage issue from the interaction between a building and the city. It questions the relation past/present in terms of listed landmarks. The chosen listed building was the Hospedaria dos Imigrantes, a late XIX century building, located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. This building is emblematic due to its ecletic architecture associated with the country's modernization desire. It also symbolizes the relations the Brazilian society intended to establish with the world of labor. The uses of Hospedaria dos Imigrantes building and its urban insertion are analyzed from the values pointed out by its process of cultural heritage classification. Specifically, the dissertation describes how those values are perceived today in such building, how they are updated into its current uses, shelter and museum, and in terms of its characters, immigrants, migrants, and needy people. The perception of what was listed and treasured and what was not is the core issue of this work.
