Esta tese se propõe a apresentar uma revisão do conceito de desenho entre os séculos XVI e XVIII, em Portugal, visando a demonstrar a importância dessa ciência nas ações oficiais da Coroa. O investimento nesse precioso instrumental de "projeto" e na formação de um quadro de profissionais habilitados para tanto, foi parte da política expansionista desenvolvida pelas nações do período. Disegno apresentava a tripla conotação de raciocínio prévio (i.e. projeto), representação gráfica e desígnio. Nesse sentido, a interpretação da série de "desenhos-desígnios" e documentação correlata legada pelos engenheiros militares, permite entrever os diferentes momentos da política de colonização e produção do "território" do Brasil e conhecer os instrumentos e a racionalidade dessa ação política. Tanto quanto qualquer arma de fogo, foi o desenho eficiente mecanismo de conhecimento, apropriação e controle do "território"; veículo capaz de fornecer à Coroa a medida do seu império e materializar nas "Conquistas" a presença de um Rei ausente.

The purpose of this thesis is to make a review of the concept of design between the 16" and 18" centuries, in Portugal, willing to demonstrate the importance of that science to the Crown. Among other things, investing IP such valuable project tools and training craftsmen to use it, was part of the expansionist policy adopted by Portugal and other countries. It must be emphasized that the meaning of words changes with time and that our current definition of drawing is quite limited vis-à-vis that prevailing sense during the period between the 16" and the 18" century. At that time, disegno had three meanings: design, drawing and intent (Plan, purpose, goal). In this broad sense, the interpretation of the set of drawings and related documents left by military engineers reveals the different moments of the colonizing policies and unveils the instruments and the rationality of such polices. As much as any military weapon, design was an efficient tool for knowledge, appropriation and control over the territory; it was a means to provide the Crown with a measure of the extent of its empire and to materialize the presence of an absent king in conquered lands.
