Este trabalho tem como base a evolução urbanística da Praça da Sé, principal espaço público da cidade de São Paulo. Ao longo do século XX, esse espaço foi objeto de inúmeras intervenções, principalmente de duas grandes reformulações nas décadas de 1910 e 1970. Nessa última intervenção, o local sofreu uma radical transformação com a implantação da estação da Sé do Metrô. Esta obra causou grande impacto na cidade, alterando definitivamente seu espaço público mais relevante e subordinando-o às necessidades técnicas de operação do Metrô paulistano. Na evolução da cidade muitas ruas e praças foram subordinadas à fluidez do tráfego e aos elementos de apoio aos transportes. Esta atitude resultou no empobrecimento dos espaços públicos e encontra na reforma da Praça da Sé dos anos 1970, um exemplo paradigmático. Ao considerar a praça pública como local de encontro e interação dos cidadãos, incorporada aos seus trajetos, percursos e práticas cotidianas, o estudo enfoca a questão dos espaços públicos na evolução urbana a partir da história da Praça da Sé. São discutidas as transformações ocorridas nesse espaço e sua relação com a estruturação da área central, principalmente quanto à hegemonia dos transportes e do sistema viário sobre os espaços coletivos e públicos da cidade.

This dissertation deals with the urbanistic evolution of the Praça da Sé, the main public space of the city of São Paulo. Throughout the twentieth Century, this square was subjected to several state interventions, especially two major redevelopments in the decades of 1910 and 1970. Over the course of the latest intervention, the Square suffered a dramatic transformation, with the construction of the largest subway station in the city the Sé station. This public work caused great impact in the city, changing forever its most relevant public space and subordinating it to the technical needs of the subway operation. In São Paulos recent history, many streets and squares have been subordinated to traffic priorities and to secondary transportation elements. This course of action has led to the impoverishment of the citys public spaces, a problem of which the Sé Squares latest redevelopment is a paradigmatic. I consider the public square as the locus of citizens meeting and interaction, incorporated in their paths and daily practices. This study analyses the role of the public spaces in the urban scene, having the history of the Sé Square as a starting point, and focusing on its transformations, as well as on their relationship with the structure of the city centre, especially in regard to the hegemony of the transportation sector over the public and collective spaces of the city.
