Keywords in Portuguese
Arquitetura moderna (Brasil)
Arquitetura moderna (Estados Unidos)

Abstract in English
From California to São Paulo is an investigation about the modern Paulist house, comparing it to North American architecture, specially that from the West Coast. A connection between São Paulo projects and the innovations coming from California and spreading abroad at the end of the 2nd World War, is an aspect that has not yet been investigated. It can help to recognize the reasons that encouraged certain modifications in the typology of Paulist houses. In studying the relationship between the modern Paulist house and the American one, three simultaneous references can be found. Besides California - with its Case Study Houses Program it is necessary to consider Marcel Breuers work in the East coast and Sarasota School in Florida, represented by Paul Rudolph and Ralph Twitchell. the house becomes the center of attention in Post War United States. In São Paulo, a city open to different international tendencies, the American example is observed with attention. Modernization becomes synonymous with Americanization.
