Abstract in English
Design competitions have been taking place for the past five centuries in the pre-capitalist and capitalist societies as a mean of selecting architectural projects that adequately express the cultural longings and accomplishments of these societies. In Brazil, a great many competitions have been organized since the competition for the Lirical Theater in Rio de Janeiro, 1857, and the two façade competitions for the buildings along Central Avenue and for the Municipal Theater at the beginning of this century, both in Rio de Janeiro, in 1903 and 1904, respectively. Our work, which consists of tracking all the activity of brazilian architects related to the organization of these competitions, has resulted in a history of architectural design competitions in Brazil from 1850 to 2000.
