O mobiliário residencial brasileiro: design, materiais e técnicas de produção

Abstract in English
This dissertation is related to the Brazilian residential furniture design emphasizing the materials and production techniques mostly used by contemporary designers. The focus on materials and productive processes aims to demonstrate the designers' responsability over its correct specification, taking into consideration that the inappropriate application can interfere directly with the environment. To allow the conviviality between man and the natural resources in a maintainable way is everybody's duty. However, architects and designers possess a unique opportunity in this sense, considering that they impose tendencies and influence collective decisions. The current scenario of furniture design in Brazil makes it possible to analyze the responsible use of raw materials, offering an overview of Brazilian woods, wooden manufactured products, plastic materials, metals, fibers, glass and alternative materials, regarding its functional and esthetical influence on products as well as the technological evolution they generate. This paper also studies craft, manufacturing and industrial production systems, so that this productive processes evolution has always been historically related to materials evolution.
