A década de 50 foi um marco de fundamental importância no desenvolvimento do design gráfico brasileiro. Alguns artistas tornaram-se designers influenciados pelos movimentos artísticos desse período e contribuíram para um novo direcionamento das artes gráficas. Quem foram estes artistas, o que fizeram e quais fatores determinaram esse processo? Com o objetivo de responder a essas perguntas, esta pesquisa traçou uma linha do tempo em que são destacados os eventos, manifestações artísticas e culturais que definiram os anos 50. Do resultado do levantamento dos artistas da década, catalogou-se vinte e dois designers, apresentando seu perfil biográfico e suas obras. Dessa amostragem foram realizadas entrevistas com alguns desses representantes. O conteúdo documental da pesquisa baseia-se principalmente nos depoimentos dos designers entrevistados em julho de 2000, compreendendo um material histórico, registro vivo dos protagonistas da história do design gráfico brasileiro.

The 1950s were a milestone in the development of the Brazilian graphic design. Some designers were influenced by artistic movements of this period and contributed to a new trend in the field. Who were these artists? What did they do? And what were the factors that marked this process? Aiming at answering these questions, this research has drawn a time line where the events and the artistic and cultural demonstrations that defined the 1950s were highlighted. An extensive survey among the artists of that period was carried out, and twenty-two designers were cataloged, along with their profiles and works. Some of them have been interviewed. The documental contents of the research have based mainly on the designers' accounts, who were interviewed in July 2000. Therefore, this is a historical material, a live record of the characters who played a role in the history of the Brazilian graphic design.
