A presente dissertação tem como finalidade resgatar o diálogo entre a arquitetura e o design no desenvolvimento das vertentes modernistas, identificando os aspectos históricos, sociais e culturais desta expressão do pensamento moderno. Nesta pesquisa, foram investigados as origens, a evolução e o amadurecimento desta linguagem. O recorte temporal foi estabelecido desde suas raízes, consideradas nos anos 1850, sublinhadas a partir da última década do século XIX, alcançando os anos 1920, no processo de instituição de uma unidade formal e conceitual entre a arquitetura e o móvel modernos. A questão foi aprofundada com o estudo de duas concepções de Gerrit Rietveld, designer e arquiteto que defendeu os conceitos do Neoplasticismo holandês, no desenvolvimento de uma estreita relação entre os projetos de uma habitação e um móvel no contexto do Movimento Moderno. Especificamente, a análise da cadeira Vermelha Azul (1918) e da casa Rietveld Schröder (Utrecht - Holanda, 1924) é essencial para a compreensão do diálogo arquitetura/design promovidos pelos arquitetos entre o final do século XIX e o início do sécul XX, e permite identificar a expressão da unidade de linguagem existente entre ambos.

The present study aims at recovering the dialogue between architecture and design in the development of modern areas, identifying historical, social and cultural aspects of this expression of modern thinking. In this research the origins, evolvement and development of this language has been investigated. The temporal cut was established from its roots, considered in the 1850's and stressed as of the last decade of the 19th century, with the development of a process of formal and conceptual unity between architecture and modern furniture in the 20's. The issue was further researched with the study of two concepts from Gerrit Rietveld, designer and architect who defended the concepts of the Dutch Neo-plastic style, to develop a narrow correlation between the projects of a house and a piece of furniture within the concept of the Modern Movement. The analysis of the Red and Blue Chair (1918), and of the Rietveld Schröder house (Utrecht - Holland, 1924) is specifically essential to understand the architecture/design dialogue performed by the architects between the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, enabling the identification of the language unity expression present between them.
