Contribuição para análise do processo de transferência das terras devolutas das mãos do poder público para a propriedade privada e seu vínculo com o crescimento da cidade de São Paulo, entre 1.930 e 2.000. Examina a própria definição de terras devolutas, assim como, questões teóricas sobre a renda da terra e a legislação que orientou as transferências. Finalmente, procura entender a relação entre o desenvolvimento da mancha urbana e a apropriação efetiva das terras devolutas no período em estudo.

A contribution to the process of the analysis of transfers of unoccupied lands from public to private property and its entailment with the growth of São Paulo city between 1.930 and 2.000. Review of the real definition of unoccupied land, as well of the theoretical controversy about the land rent and the legislation which orients these transfers. Finally, an attempt to understand the relation which exists between the development of the urbanized area and the actual appropriation of the unoccupied land during the period under study.
