Este estudo pretende investigar o que foi a modernidade brasileira durante seu período inicial, a partir da arquitetura das escolas públicas construídas na capital do país durante o período de 1928-1940. A arquitetura das escolas, pensada dentro de uma historicidade concreta, foi discutida como paradigma de um projeto de modernização da sociedade e da própria arquitetura. Os conteúdos globais e culturais implícitos no desenvolvimento de uma tipologia funcional - o prédio escolar - permitiram pensar não só o próprio processo de desenho e as implicações da atividade projetual, como também, responder objetivamente sobre a criação de um espaço moderno em arquitetura, condizente com o discurso oficial que se dizia moderno e revolucionário. De uma maneira mais abrangente, o estudo reflete sobre o grau de influência das determinações sociais globais sobre a forma, enquanto expressão plástica e organização espacial.

This research aims to investigate the Brazilian modernity during its initial period, through the architecture of public schools, built in the capital of the country in the years of 1928-1940. The schools architecture, reflected from a historical perspective, is discussed as being the paradigm of a society modernization project as well as architecture's. The global and cultural contents within the development of a functional typology the school building enabled analyzing not only the designing process itself implications of the projecting activities, but also objectively answering about the generation of a modern space in architecture, in accordance presented as with the governmental speech, pretending to be modern and revolutionary. From a broader perspective, the research reflects about the level of the influence of the global social directions over the form, while plastic expression and special organization.
