Abstract in English
The approach to the connections between modem aesthetics and photojoumalism is the starting point of the thesis. Photojoumalism is understood as an historical issue that is affirmed between 1930s and 1940s, specially in the illustrated magazines and later tuning out to be international issue. It is stated that it is just in the domain of the photographic code, which was possible with the modernist experience, that photography was allowed to break down with the proposal of a faithful representation of the visible world and turned to be a construction of reality. This is taken here as the foundation element of photojoumalism and its worldwide assimilation by the mass media. The background of this investigation goes back to the 19th century popular illustrated newspapers until the Second World War, and its concentrates in the contribution of the photographer Jean Manzon to the weekly magazine O Cruzeiro between 1943 and 1951. Jean Manzon, a French immigrant that has moved to Brazil is considered as a channel of transmission of a certain model of European photojoumalism in Brazil and, at the same time as an agent in the construction of a particular national identity. It is important to note that the large iconography presented here is absolutely linked with the reflection and interpretations but it is organized in a separated volume.
