Title in Portuguese
O tijolo nas construções paulistanas do século XIX
Keywords in Portuguese
História da arquitetura (São Paulo - SP)

Abstract in English
The intent of this work is to present a better understanding of the economic, social, cultural and technical factors, which took place in the city of São Paulo, during the "coffee period" and led to the development of a new architecture style, from the second half of the 19th century on. By means of a study concerning the introduction of bricks and its wide-spread use as a construction material, the brick is viewed as an influential conditioner for the evolution of the "coffee period" in São Paulo. Also, the brick is surveyed throughout history as one of the main building materials. Its inception, fabrication, processes, methods of being used and building system are investigated. The early uses of the bricks as a construction material and the factores wich led to its large scale usage in Brasil and São Paulo, are throughly examined. The relationship regarding the early brick manufacturing facilities and constructors who were active in São Paulo by the second half of the 19th century, is also realized. Some of the brick constructions in São Paulo (city) are mentioned, as a reference, to pointing up the correlation of the "new architecture" with the structural system, both as a building method and architectonic style.
