João Batista Vilanova Artigas (1915-1985)

Abstract in English
This work intends to contribute to the understanding of the conceptual elements that inform the thought and work of architect João Batista Vilanova Artigas. In this sense, it examines both the Russian Constructivist vanguard and Socialist Realism from the point of view of the connection between revolution and architecture. In following, it deals with the question of nationalism, for that is what informs an understanding of the Brazilian modern movement and, particularly, its architectonic expression. Next, it analyses Artigas' production from the end of the 1930s to the end of the 1960s, verifying the influences on his professional activity and the dialogue that it tries to establish with some local and international cultural and architectonic positions. Finally, the text discusses in what way Artigas articulates questions in his work relative to modernity, to modernism, and to modernization - these intermixed with national and social problems - and how he establishes through his architecture an image of Brazil and its development, which should lead, according to his partisans-political conception, to national sovereingty.
