Tempestade severa

Abstract in English
Severe storms associated with hail are frequent in southeastern South America. This work analyzes the spatial and temporal distribution of hailfalls in the Rio Grande do Sul region using hail detection parameters in storms observed with weather radar data. The characteristics of these systems were analyzed between the years 2017 and 2018. In addition to the radar reflectivity data, it was also used lightning and reanalysis data at synoptic times. Storms were tracked in the radar reflectivity fields and the parameters of Severe Hail Index (SHI) and Probability of Severe Hail (POSH) were calculated to identify severe hailstorms. Regardless of the index and threshold considered, regions most favorable to the occurrence of hail are coincident, and are between the south and center of the state and part of the west, and the observed minimums are in the northeast sector of the radar coverage area. The spring and summer months are those with the highest occurrence of severe hail, with the summer months having the storms with the shortest trajectories. In the diurnal cycle, the highest frequency of severe hail is at night, between 23 and 02 UTC (20 and 23 local time), and the lowest frequency occurs between late morning and the afternoon. A direct relationship was observed between the size of the storm cores and their severity and lightning density, but these, in general, are not very extensive. When comparing the thermodynamic instability and shear environments of non-severe and severe storms, it was observed that the available convective potential energy (CAPE) and the deep level shear (between surface and 6 km; DLS) of the severe cases are superior, however, the low-level shear (between surface and 1 km; LLS) does not show significant difference between the cases. Two case studies with confirmed hail records showed that the Vertically Integrated Liquid water content (VIL), Vertically Integrated Ice content (VII) and SHI are coincident with the times of possible hailfall occurrence, suggesting they are good diagnostic tools. POSH index was not a good indicator for the fall time, but it can be an indicator of the severity of the storm.
