Abstract in English
Aiming at enhancing Open Innovation actions an increasing number of corporations sought new forms of engaging with startups, led mainly by innovation potential and agility of these birthing companies. However, being a new and rapidly evolving process in Brazil, there is a clash of culture between the traditional and formal culture of big corporations and the flexibility and agility of startups. This research objective is to identify the barriers which hinder the relation between corporations and startups in the execution of Open Innovation initiatives, as well it aims at identifying the recommended best practices by those who have gone through this experience. The research is exploratory in terms of its objective, with a qualitative approach using the multiple case study method. First, a literature review was conducted to identify these barriers. Next, three corporations known by their Open Innovation actions were selected to have their case studied using data collection through semi-structured interviews with stakeholders that took part in these actions: innovations leaders, internal clients, consultants, and startups representants. Last, a comparison was carried out between the collected data of these case studies and the barriers identified in the literature using deductive content analysis, as well as a comparison between the corporation and stakeholders data. Furthermore, as correlation was carried out between interviewed recommended best practices and barriers identified. As a result, were identified 28 barriers when corporations engage with startups and 6 best practices which help to prevent them. For the benefit of all stakeholders involved, this research will contribute to the relation between large companies and startups achieving better results, boosting Open Innovation initiatives in Brazil and new researches.
