Este trabalho tem por objetivo explorar o conceito de responsabilidade social buscando maior entendimento sobre o tema e levando a reflexão para à realidade das instituições de ensino superior privadas. Realizou-se uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o tema responsabilidade social para formulação de um referencial conceitual. O tema ainda é bastante novo e controverso, o que certamente merecerá atenção especial nos próximos anos. A instituição de ensino superior privada também é uma empresa e como tal tem o desafio de conciliar o objetivo econômico, aos objetivos sociais e os ambientais. Os conceitos de responsabilidade social também são aplicáveis à gestão destas instituições de ensino, entretanto, não se pode esquecer que há uma forte expectativa da sociedade em relação às instituições de ensino, principalmente quanto à produção e transmissão do conhecimento. A partir dos conceitos levantados elaborou-se uma pesquisa exploratória para identificar qual a compreensão dos educadores e gestores sobre a responsabilidade social das instituições de ensino superior privadas. As análises revelaram que ainda há um longo caminho a ser percorrido, principalmente, quanto ao papel das instituições de ensino superior. Essa clareza de papel permitirá uma definição mais precisa dos principais stakeholders, avaliar a qualidade dos relacionamentos e, consequentemente, a elaboração de estratégias de ação para incorporação de preceitos éticos nos relacionamentos com os stakeholders.

This work aims to explore the concept of social responsibility, seeking a better understanding of the subject and taking the reflection to the reality of private higher education institutions. A bibliographic review was carried out on the subject of social responsibility for the formulation of a conceptual framework. The theme is still quite new and controversial, which will certainly deserve special attention in the coming years. The private higher education institution is also a company and as such has the challenge of reconciling the economic objective with the social and environmental objectives. The concepts of social responsibility are also applicable to the management of these educational institutions, however, one cannot forget that there is a strong expectation from society in relation to educational institutions, mainly regarding the production and transmission of knowledge. Based on the concepts raised, an exploratory research was carried out to identify the understanding of educators and managers about the social responsibility of private higher education institutions. The analyzes revealed that there is still a long way to go, mainly regarding the role of higher education institutions. This role clarity will allow a more precise definition of the main stakeholders, assess the quality of relationships and, consequently, the elaboration of action strategies to incorporate ethical precepts in relationships with stakeholders.
