O ambiente institucional - considerando seus componentes: regulatório, normativo, e cognitivo - tem exigido das empresas adaptações para seguir as regras do jogo mercadológico e inovar, considerando a inovação como uma necessidade para a conquista de vantagens competitivas sustentáveis. A conexão entre a inovação e o ambiente institucional é particularmente relevante para pequenas empresas, mais comumente vulneráveis às influências externas devido ao fato de suas vantagens competitivas tenderem a ser menos sustentáveis do que as das grandes empresas em uma mudança do ambiente (Urban, 2014, 2016). Diante disso, estudar a influência do ambiente institucional na inovação é algo fundamental. Dessa forma, este estudo tem como objetivo analisar a associação entre a favorabilidade do ambiente institucional e a inovação em empresas startups. Como objetivos específicos, busca-se (a) verificar a associação entre a favorabilidade do ambiente institucional (componentes regulatório, normativo e cognitivo) e a inovação (produto, processo, valor, gestão e modelo de negócio) em empresas startups e (b) verificar o efeito moderador do fato de as empresas pertencerem à incubadoras na relação entre o ambiente institucional e a inovação em empresas startups. Para tanto, foi utilizada uma abordagem quantitativa, que consistiu na coleta de dados em 303 empresas, das quais 210 mostraram-se válidas para a pesquisa e que compôs a amostra do estudo. Como resultado, identificou-se que há associações significativas entre alguns componentes do ambiente institucional e alguns dentre os tipos de inovação. O componente regulatório do ambiente institucional apresentou associação significativa com a inovação em gestão, apesar de os resultados terem demonstrado uma relação negativa, indicando que ambientes cujo componente regulatório é desfavorável tendem a impulsionar mais inovações em gestão. Além disso, identificaram-se também associações significativas entre o componente normativo do ambiente institucional e as inovações de produto, processo e valor, e, por último, demonstrou-se associação significativa entre o componente regulatório do ambiente institucional e a inovação de gestão. Como efeito moderação do fato de a empresa pertencer a incubadoras, notou-se que apenas a relação entre o componente regulatório e a inovação de gestão é moderada inversamente. Os desdobramentos desses resultados são apresentados na seção de discussões do estudo.

The institutional environment - and its components: regulatory, normative, and cognitive - has required many adaptations from companies, in order to follow the rules of the market game and innovate, considering innovation as a need for the achievement of sustainable competitive advantages. The connection between innovation and the institutional environment is particularly relevant for small companies, mostly vulnerable to external influences, since their competitive advantages tend to be less sustainable than those of large companies, in the case of an environmental change (Urban, 2014, 2016). Therefore, it is vital to examine the influence of the institutional environment on innovation. This study aims to analyze the association between the favorability of the institutional environment and innovation in startup companies. As specific objectives, it seeks (a) to check the association between the favorability of the institutional environment (considering its regulatory, normative and cognitive components) and innovation (product, process, value, management, and business model) in startups; and (b) to verify the moderating effect of incubators on the relationship between the institutional environment and innovation, for incubated startups. Hence, we used a quantitative approach that collected data in 303 companies, of which 210 were valid for the research and comprised the study sample. As a result, we identified significant associations between some components of the institutional environment and some types of innovation. The regulatory component of the institutional environment showed a significant association with management innovation, although results revealed a negative relationship, indicating that environments whose regulatory component is unfavorable tend to stimulate more innovations in management. In addition, we also identified significant associations between the normative component of the institutional environment and innovations in product, process and value. Finally, we have demonstrated a significant association between the regulatory component of the institutional environment and management innovation. Regarding the moderating effect of incubators, they inversely moderated only the relationship between the regulatory component and management innovation.
