A elasticidade da mão-de-obra no setor supermercadista brasileiro: mensuração e análise
Keywords in Portuguese

Abstract in English
The Brazilian Commercial Activity, according to the Annual Research of the Commerce from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistic), employed 5,5 workers by commercial establishment in 1990, turning to 3,7 workers by establishment in 2001. For the 500 largest hyper/ supermarkets, this number rose from 80,2, in 1990, to 109,5, in 2000, a 37% growth. However, the total income of the segment experimented a real growth of 96,6% during the considered period. From a rank of the 300 biggest supermarket companies by their 2001 total gross revenue, the top five companies employed, on average, 5,4 workers by each million of Reais of the annual gross revenue earned, as long as, the last 100 ranked companies employed, on average, 8,5 workers. In this study, through the observation of determined operational parameters of 1130 companies of supermarket sector, which were observed during the period from 1995 to 2001, it is estimated, through an econometric model based on the Cobb-Douglas production function and using the data disposal on panel, the partial elasticity of manpower in relation to such parameters. It is considered a category with the whole set of companies from the sample, and aiming to investigate eventual differences of policies due to the company importance, a second and a third category represented, respectively, by the set of the 50 largest companies and by the others, are also subject of estimation by the model
