Os estudos recentes sobre a evolução da desigualdade regional no Brasil têm se concentrado na questão da convergência de rendas per capita entre os estados brasileiros, sem, contudo, explorar a dinâmica dos principais determinantes destes agregados: os produtos por trabalhador estaduais. Não se exploram assim nem a influência das diferentes taxas estaduais de emprego do fator trabalho, muito menos as influências das fontes de variação dos produtos por trabalhador dos estados nos resultados obtidos sobre a questão da convergência de rendas per capita. A presente tese reconsidera a questão da convergência de renda per capita entre os estados a partir da convergência dos produtos agregados por trabalhador entre os estados brasileiros. Seu principal objetivo é analisar o papel das fontes de variação destes produtos na evolução das desigualdades. A partir da demonstração do fato de que o comportamento deste agregado pode ser reflexo tanto dos movimentos dos produtos por trabalhador setoriais (fontes intra-setoriais), como de realocações de fatores entre os setores (fontes inter-setoriais), são fornecidas evidências empíricas sobre a importância destas fontes para a trajetória convergente/divergente observada para o produto per capita e por trabalhador dos estados.

The recent studies about the evolution of income disparities among Brazilian States have been directed to the question of convergence of per capita without worrying about the dynamic of the main determinant of these agregates: the product per worker. Therefore, these studies neither explore the possible influence of differing rates of occupation of the work force, nor point out the importance of the sources of variation of the agregate product per worker to the results of convergence/divergence of the incomes per capita and products per worker among States. This study reconsiders the convergence of per capita incomes among Brazilian States from the perspective of the agregate products per worker. Its main objective is to analyse the role of the sources of movement of these products on the evolution of States per capita incomes disparities. By showing that the dynamic of the States agregate products per worker is conducted by the dynamic of setorial product per worker (an intra-sectorial source of movement) and also possibly by reallocations of productive factors among sectors, the study provides empirical evidences of the relative importance of these different sources to the dynamic of convergence/divergence of per capita incomes and products per worker among Brazilian States observed during the period 1981-97.
