Analisam-se a frequência e o atraso escolar no Brasil e seus principais determinantes no período de 1981 a 1999. Em especial, utilizando-se a variação da distribuição da renda no tempo e entre regiões, verifica-se se há relação causal entre renda familiar e os indicadores educacionais: estimou-se que não há efeito direto da renda familiar sobre a frequência escolar

School attendance and delay in Brazil and their main determinants in the period from 1981 to 1999 are analyzed.
