Abstract in English
This study contributes to the understanding of the causality between different credit measures and economic activity indicators in the State and lhe Metropolitan Region of São Patdo - MRSP - from the mid 90's to 2003. During this period a strengthening process regarding financial activity in the region took place. In spite of being a controversial issue, there seems to be enough theoretical argument evidence as well as empirical results in economic research to come to the conclusion that financial development influences economic growth in a decisive manner. Questions may be raised as to the existing causality, as proposed by Granger, between certain aspects of economic activity in the mentioned locations and the development of their respective financial agents. A path which has not yet been explored by the economic literature is hereby being looked into. In order to answer this question, two analytical approaches have been established The first one focuses on the relation between different credit modalities and diverse elements from São Paulo's industrial output, spanning over the period from January 1995 to December 2003, by using a multivariate Autoregressive Vector model (VAR) plus another bivariate. The second one stresses lhe relation between credit variables and economic activity in MRSP, measured by the Economic Activity Index ( IMEC), for the period from January 1992 to December 2003. A VAR bivariate model has been employed in this phase of lhe research. The results of both approaches illustrate that the local financial development has followed the economic growth during the analysed time period.
