Distributive wage Phillips curve: evidences from Brazil

Wage Inequality
Abstract in English
We study whether changes in unemployment rate, throughout its impacts on the labor market, have heterogeneous effects along the wage distribution and how it affects brazilian wage inequality. Our main hypothesis is that workers at the bottom have lower labor bargain power, therefore their wages should be more affected after unemployment spikes. Using municipalities data from the Censo Demográfico for 1970, 1980, 1991, 2000 e 2010, we estimate quantile regressions to support our hypothesis. Thus, we can measure distincts effects along the wage distribution; also if there were changes over this four decades. Our results shows considerable heterogeneity in the 70s, 80s and 90s, following closely up our hypothesis. Over this period, lower wage workers were overpenalized as a consequence of rising unemployment rates. However, in the 2000s decade, this impact became much more homogenous.
